Uninhabited Kubbar
Island lies at a distance of 18 nautical
miles south of Failaka Island opposite
Al-Fahaheel coastline, and 19 nautical miles
from Al-Zoor coast. A solar-powered
lighthouse was built there as well as a
natural landing field for helicopters. It
has many species of rare plants, in addition
to some scarce corals. There are low hills
in middle of the island, which gradually
slope towards sea level. Its shores are
quite and its sand is soft. Seagulls and
flamingos exist there in great numbers. A
compelling reason to select Kubbar as the
first protected natural environment among
the numerous Kuwaiti Islands is its unique
natural state. Preliminary measures such as
limiting human activities on the island and
its coast were implemented to protect the
island from pollution, which would threaten
its natural life. These measures were taken
following the desertion of some rare birds
and the disappearance of rare plants from
the island. Tourism will surely flourish on
the island once the project to turn it into
a protected zone has been implemented.
